Fibromyalgia sufferers have many treatment options to choose from. Unfortunately, none work very well.
Medical care for fibromylagia means drugs. Drugs to try and control the pain. Drugs for sleeping. Drugs for anxiety and depression. Drugs for headaches. Drugs for nerve pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs. Etc. At best medication may help a little with fibromyalgia symptoms. But at worst? All drugs have side effects. ALL. But because drugs don't get rid of what's causing the symptoms of fibromyalgia, they are doomed to fail in the end.
Now there's Lyrica, the first drug the FDA approved for fibromyalgia pain after two studies. Funny thing, though, a patient's chances of improving their pain (by at least 30%) on Lyrica was around 48%. Placebo (sugar pill with no therapeutic effect other than the patient's mind) helped about 25%. So Lyrica was only a little less than twice as effective as placebo. And what about Lyrica's side effects? Check this out:
dizziness - sleepiness - weight gain (15-20 lbs. the first month) - blurry vision
dry mouth - constipation - feeling "high" - swelling of hands and feet
balance problems - trouble concentrating - increased appetite - headache
Lastly, the studies said when patients stopped taking Lyrica all their symptoms came back.
Alternative treatments for fibromyalgia is a mixed bag. Chiropractic (alone) and massage give temporary relief, if the patient can tolerate it, because fibromyalgia symptoms are not caused by spinal misalignments or muscle problems. That's just where some of the symptoms occur. Acupuncture can help with many things, but not fibromyalgia. Besides, fibro patients have a healthy fear of needles. Vitamins and herbs are of little benefit by themselves. And what about those miracle juices? If it were only that simple…
Not to say that any of these treatments can't help. They might. But, like drugs, they don't get to the cause of fibromyalgia symptoms so any relief they might bring is almost always short lived.
Some patients who come to me have given up on everything. They don't take any drugs, except maybe over-the-counter pain meds, and they don't take any supplements. Can't say that I blame them, though, because nothing they tried helped.
At the risk of saying something terribly obvious, for any treatment to be effective it must address the causes of fibromyalgia symptoms. I believe that my treatment program does just that. Bold statement, I know, but I have statistics that say my treatment program is very effective at reliefing fibro symptoms.
You'll recall that fibromyalgia is a syndrome, or collection of symptoms. While pain is the symptom most patient really want fixed fast, it's not the only symptom. We track the top 13 symptoms of fibromyalgia as patient go through our treatment program. They fill out an analogue scale questionnaire every six treatments, rating themselves on a scale of 0-10.
Our patients acheive an average decrease in their overall symptom profile by 67.7%.
What does this mean? It means that if a patient starts with a pain level of 9 and does average in the treatment program, he or she will finish with a pain level of 3. That's a big difference. There's not a lot one can do with a pain level of 9. There's almost nothing they can't do with a 3.
Also,
80% of our fibromyalgia patients have a positive outcome in our treatment program.
What do I mean by this? I mean 80% of the time the treatment program was considered succesful. Some patients end up with no fibromyalgia symptoms, but the average patient improves by 67% or more.
Here's a few examples. The chart on the bottom of each image was copies right out of the patient's file and shows a graph of their symptom profile score.
